Teen Opinions Count Presentation at AEA 2019

CSI and the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation worked with thousands of teens across Western New York and Southeast Michigan, using Group Concept Mapping (GCM) to find out what teens want to do when they’re not in school. This is the largest GCM project to date, taking advantage of the mobile device capabilities of the new GCM tool, groupwisdomTM.  A review of Phase I of this project was presented at the American Evaluators Association 2019 Conference in November, A Philanthropic Perspective on Engaging Youth Voice Through Group Concept Mapping.

The abstract for this presentation:

Engaging and elevating youth voice is critical to understanding more precisely what teens want, particularly when it comes to out of school time (OST). Many OST opportunities exist, and yet a need for additional OST activities persists, suggesting the need is not met. In this panel, you will learn about the largest Group Concept Mapping (CGM) effort ever undertaken, engaging over 15,000 teens in Western New York and South East Michigan.  Presentations will be made by a representative of the foundation that commissioned the study, two experts in Group Concept Mapping (GCM), and two evaluators who facilitated teen and adult engagement in the project. The panel provides insight into a philanthropic perspective that relied directly on youth voice to guide foundation investment, how GCM can be useful for engaging teens in sensemaking, and our experience engaging and recruiting thousands of teenagers.
