How do I create and view a Pattern Match in groupwisdom™?

You can generate Pattern Matches in the Reports page of groupwisdom™ after approving data, creating a scenario, and creating a cluster map. See the Create a new Pattern Match section below for detailed steps or view the video tutorial.

Overview – Reports – Pattern Match

For more information on interpreting the maps and reports based on those maps, read chapter 6 of Concept Mapping for Planning and Evaluation.

Pattern Matches are comparisons of the cluster ratings across criteria such as

  • different stakeholder groups on the same rating criteria, or
  • different rating scales using the same stakeholder group, or
  • different points in time using the same stakeholder group or rating scales.

The Pattern Match uses a ladder graph representation.

  • The analysis computes the statement averages across all participants with approved rating data. It then uses the statement averages for all items within that cluster to compute the cluster average for each cluster.
  • This uses the scale in question and any other variables (participant question data) set by the administrator. One variable is shown on each vertical axis.
  • The position of each cluster on the ladder graph is based on its rating value.  Straight lines are drawn between the same cluster on each side of the graph.  The data will use the colors set during the editing of the cluster rating map.
  • A correlation value known as the Pearson product-moment correlation representing the relationship between 2 values can be viewed by selecting the map details icon to the right of the pattern match graphic.

Create a new Pattern Match

  1. Go to the main Reports page using the left navigation menu.
  2. Next, select the NEW REPORT button on the top right of the screen.  A pop up window will appear.
  3. Select PATTERN MATCH so it is highlighted in blue and then select the CONTINUE button at the bottom of the pop-up window.
  4. Name your Pattern Match and select the appropriate Scenario.
  5. Your cluster solution will be the default option that appears in the SELECT CLUSTER MAP field.  You can switch to any other option that is available in compare maps from ANALYSIS.
  6. For Line 1, set the RATING QUESTION which will automatically fill in the AXIS NAME.
  7. You will need to edit the AXIS NAME further if you choose a demographic variable to compare using FILTER PARTICIPANTS. Selecting Add a condition under FILTER PARTICIPANTS will provide a drop down menu of your Participant Questions and the potential responses.
  8. Select whether you want your comparison to be Relative or Absolute.
    • A Relative Pattern Match uses the high and low specific to each variable being compared.
    • An Absolute Pattern Match uses the highest for both variables and the lowest for both variables.  This should be used in multi-pattern matches.
    • Example: If one variable axis has a high of 3 and a low of 2.7 and the other has a high of 2 and a low of 1.7:
      • A Relative Pattern Match will show subtle variations in the order of ranking – perhaps the highest rated cluster for variable 1 is the lowest rated cluster for variable 2.  This is important to note for interpretation.
      • An Absolute Pattern Match will show the trend that variable 1 was rated lower than variable 2.

Create a Multi-Pattern Match and compare more than 2 variables:

  1. After filling in the items for Lines 1 and 2, at the bottom of the screen select +Add new line.
  2. Please note, when making a multi-pattern match you should set axis values to Absolute.
  3. Enter in the variable information for your additional lines.  Double check to ensure all fields are entered correctly.
  4. Select the CREATE button at the bottom of the screen when the data for all lines is correct.

Edit a Pattern Match:

  1. You can begin by choosing the EDIT MAP button on the top right of your screen.  This will allow you to edit the size of the text used in the figure.  When you are happy with the text size, select SAVE CHANGES.
  2. You can select the View icon to toggle on and off Axis values.
  3. You can view the correlation by selecting the Map details icon .

Export Pattern Match:

Once final, you can export your map using the 3-dot menu at the top right of the screen next to the EDIT MAP button.

  1. Select the 3-dot menu.
  2. Select Export map as…
    • Select JPG, PNG or Vector image or PDF & Word document to just export the image.
    • Select PowerPoint if you would like an editable image.
      • Open the Map details icon before exporting to also export the correlation table.
    • Select CSV to export the average cluster rating for each variable.

Edit set up conditions:

To edit the data used in a Pattern Match after it has been created:

  1. Return to the main Reports screen
  2. Select the carrot next to the scenario name to view all figures
  3. Locate the Pattern Match you wish to edit by name
  4. Select the 3-dot menu to the right of its name
  5. Select Edit Report and you will be able to edit the name and other variable details used to make that Pattern Match report
  6. This menu also contains Delete Report if you would like to completely delete a Pattern Match or other report you previously have made.
